App Icon Size Guide for iOS and Android (2026)

App icon size guide for 2026: the 1024 × 1024 iOS master, Android adaptive layers at 108 dp with a 66 dp safe zone, and the 512 × 512 Google Play icon.

ScreenShipper team · · 8 min read

Quick answer: Design one 1024 × 1024 px master. On iOS, add it to Xcode's AppIcon as a single size without transparency, and Xcode creates the smaller sizes. On Android, use 108 × 108 dp adaptive layers with 72 dp visible, your logo inside the 66 dp safe zone, and a monochrome layer. Google Play needs a separate 512 × 512 px 32-bit PNG up to 1 MB.

The rest of this guide explains where each size comes from and how to produce all of them from a single design. If you already have a 1024 px master, the free app icon generator exports the iOS, Android and Google Play files in one go.

iOS App Icon Sizes

Apple's current guidance is simple: provide one 1024 × 1024 px image and let Xcode do the rest. In the AppIcon set of your asset catalog, choose Single Size and Xcode generates every variation the system needs for the Home Screen, Spotlight, Settings and notifications. The same 1024 image is used for your App Store listing, because the App Store icon comes from your app's asset catalog rather than a separate upload.

For reference, these are the classic sizes Xcode derives for iPhone and iPad:

Where it appearsPointsPixels
iPhone Home Screen60 pt120 px (@2x), 180 px (@3x)
iPad Home Screen76 pt152 px (@2x)
iPad Pro Home Screen83.5 pt167 px (@2x)
Spotlight40 pt80 px (@2x), 120 px (@3x)
Settings29 pt58 px (@2x), 87 px (@3x)
Notifications20 pt40 px (@2x), 60 px (@3x)

You only need to supply these individually if you want to hand-tune detail at small sizes. If you do, every image must still be a flattened, opaque PNG.

Dark, tinted and Liquid Glass icons

Since iOS 18, people can show dark and tinted Home Screen icons. In Xcode you add these as extra appearances of the same single-size icon: Apple asks for the dark icon with a transparent background so the system background shows through, and the tinted icon as a grayscale image. If you skip them, the system generates its own treatment.

With iOS 26, Apple introduced the Liquid Glass design and Icon Composer, a tool for building layered icons for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch from one design. Apple's Human Interface Guidelines list 1024 × 1024 px as the layout size for iOS, iPadOS and macOS layered icons. Follow Apple's documentation for the details, since this area is still evolving. Our guides to iOS app icon requirements and dark and tinted app icons go deeper.

Android App Icon Sizes

Android has used adaptive icons since Android 8.0. Each icon has a foreground layer and a background layer, both sized at 108 × 108 dp. The launcher masks them into a circle, squircle or rounded square depending on the device, and uses the outer 18 dp on each side for effects like parallax. That leaves 72 × 72 dp visible, and Google calls the central 66 × 66 dp the safe zone that no mask will clip. Keep your logo between 48 and 66 dp.

Because Android devices have different screen densities, the same dp size means different pixel sizes:

DensityScaleAdaptive layer (108 dp)Visible area (72 dp)Legacy icon (48 dp)
mdpi1x108 px72 px48 px
hdpi1.5x162 px108 px72 px
xhdpi2x216 px144 px96 px
xxhdpi3x324 px216 px144 px
xxxhdpi4x432 px288 px192 px

Launcher icons go in the mipmap resource folders. If you define your layers as vector drawables, one file scales cleanly to every density, which is what Google recommends. To support themed icons, add a monochrome layer at the same 108 dp size; launchers that support theming tint it to match the user's wallpaper. See Android Adaptive Icon Guidelines for the XML setup.

Tip: If you design on a 1024 × 1024 canvas and reuse it as an Android foreground layer, the visible area is about 683 px wide and the safe zone about 626 px. Anything outside that circle may be cut off on some devices.

Google Play Store Icon Size

The icon on your Google Play listing is separate from the launcher icon inside your app. You upload it in Play Console, and Google's specification is:

  • Size: 512 × 512 px
  • Format: 32-bit PNG
  • Color space: sRGB
  • File size: up to 1,024 KB
  • Shape: a full square. Google Play applies the rounded corners (a radius of 30% of the icon size) and the drop shadow itself.

Google also recommends a background without transparency, because transparent areas show the Play interface color behind them, and it prohibits text or graphics that indicate ranking, promote deals or imply participation in a Play program. Details are in Google Play Icon Requirements.

How to Design One Master That Works Everywhere

  1. Start on a 1024 × 1024 px square canvas with no rounded corners and no drop shadow. Every platform applies its own mask.
  2. Keep the core symbol centered and compact. If it fits inside the Android safe zone (about 61% of the canvas width), it will survive every mask, including Apple Watch's circle.
  3. Build it in two layers: a background (solid color or gradient) and a foreground symbol. You will need them separately for Android and for layered Apple icons.
  4. Export an opaque PNG for the iOS 1024 icon and the Play 512 icon. Transparent pixels here cause upload problems or odd backgrounds.
  5. Make a single-color version of the symbol for Android's monochrome layer and as a starting point for tinted icons.
  6. Check it at 40 to 60 px on a real Home Screen. If the symbol turns into a smudge, simplify it. App Icon Design Tips covers the craft side.

Common App Icon Size Mistakes

  • An alpha channel in the iOS icon. Even a fully opaque image saved with an alpha channel can trigger an upload error. Flatten it before export; see How to Remove the Alpha Channel.
  • Pre-rounded corners. Baking in corners leaves visible edges once the system applies its own mask.
  • A logo that fills the whole Android layer. Anything outside the 72 dp visible area is cropped, and outside the 66 dp safe zone it may be clipped by some launchers.
  • Upscaling the 512 Play icon. Always export from the 1024 master or vector source.
  • Forgetting the Play icon is separate. Updating your launcher icon in the app does not update the icon on your Play listing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should an app icon be for the App Store?

1024 × 1024 px, as a square PNG without transparency. You add it to your app's asset catalog in Xcode, and the App Store uses the icon from your build.

Do I still need to export every iOS icon size?

No. Current versions of Xcode can generate all the smaller iPhone and iPad sizes from a single 1024 × 1024 image. Mac apps that use an asset catalog still need each size, from 16 × 16 px up to 1024 × 1024 px.

What size is the Google Play Store icon?

512 × 512 px, saved as a 32-bit PNG in sRGB and no larger than 1,024 KB. Upload a full square; Google Play rounds the corners and adds the shadow.

What size are Android launcher icons in pixels?

Adaptive icon layers are 108 dp, which is 432 px at xxxhdpi, 324 px at xxhdpi and 216 px at xhdpi. Legacy 48 dp icons are 192 px at xxxhdpi.

Can I use the same icon file for iOS and Android?

You can use the same design, but not the same files. iOS needs an opaque 1024 px PNG, while Android needs separate foreground, background and monochrome layers sized for the adaptive icon safe zone.
