How to Write an App Store Description That Converts

Write an App Store description people actually read. Learn the 4,000-character limit, why the first lines matter most, a proven structure and examples.

ScreenShipper team · · 8 min read

Quick answer: Your App Store description is up to 4,000 characters of plain text below your screenshots. On iOS it isn't one of the fields Apple lists for search matching, so write it for people: lead with your strongest benefit in the first sentence, the only part visible before "more," then cover key features, proof, what's free versus paid, and how to get support.

App Store Description Basics: Limit, Format and Placement

The description lives on your product page under the screenshots and the promotional text. Most visitors see only the first lines before they tap "more," and many never tap at all. Apple's own guidance is blunt: "The first sentence of your description is the most important."

Two consequences follow. First, the description is a conversion tool on iOS, not a ranking tool. Second, every edit waits for your next release, so write a version that stays accurate for months. If you need text you can update at any time, use the 170-character promotional text above the description.

Does the App Store Description Affect Search Ranking?

Apple's App Store search documentation says results depend on text relevance, meaning matches for your app's title, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior like downloads, ratings and reviews. The description isn't on that list. Apple's product page guidance also says: "Don't add unnecessary keywords to your description in an attempt to improve search results."

So on iOS:

  • Put your search terms in the app name, subtitle and keywords field.
  • Use natural language in the description; repeating keywords only makes it harder to read.
  • Remember that your product page also exists on the web, so a clear, specific description still helps anyone who lands there from a search engine.

Google Play is different. There's no keywords field, and the full description is part of how Play matches your app to searches. If you publish on both stores, start from one draft and then adapt it, following our guide to the Google Play description.

A Proven Structure for App Store Descriptions

Use this six-part structure and you'll cover what visitors want to know in the order they want to know it.

  1. Opening line. One or two sentences that say what the app does and who it's for. This is the only part most people read, so it should work alone.
  2. Expanded promise. Two or three short sentences on the main outcome. Why does this app make the job easier than the alternatives?
  3. Feature list. Five to eight lines, each starting with a benefit, then the feature that delivers it. Plain-text bullets such as "•" or "–" keep it scannable.
  4. Proof. Real awards, press mentions or review highlights, only if they're true and current.
  5. What's free and what's paid. Guideline 2.3.2 asks you to make clear whether featured items or subscriptions require additional purchases, and 3.1.2(c) asks you to describe what people get for the price before they subscribe.
  6. Support and next step. How to reach you, plus a short closing line. Many subscription apps also add links to their terms of use and privacy policy here.

Tip: Write the opening line last. After you've listed every feature and benefit, it's much easier to see which single promise matters most.

App Store Description Example (Hypothetical Budget App)

Here's a complete description for a hypothetical app called Penny Ledger, broken into its parts so you can see what each one does.

PartExample copy
Opening lineKnow where every dollar goes. Penny Ledger turns your spending into a simple monthly budget you'll actually stick to.
Expanded promiseSet a budget in two minutes, log expenses with one tap and see at a glance how much is left for groceries, rent or fun. No spreadsheets, no guilt.
Feature 1• Plan your month: create category budgets and watch them update as you spend.
Feature 2• Never miss a bill: get reminders before rent, subscriptions and utilities are due.
Feature 3• Save on purpose: set goals for a trip, a laptop or an emergency fund.
Feature 4• Share with your partner: invite one person to a shared household budget.
Feature 5• See the trends: clear charts show where your money went each month.
What's paidPenny Ledger is free to use with up to five budget categories. Penny Ledger Plus unlocks unlimited categories, shared budgets and export.

Notice what's missing: no keyword lists, no "#1 budget app," no vague claims. Every line answers a question a visitor might have.

Strong Opening Lines by Category

The first sentence should be specific enough that it couldn't describe a competitor. Some before-and-after examples for hypothetical apps:

The strong versions name an outcome, a context or a number that is true for the app. If you claim "500 puzzles," make sure there are 500.

App Store Description Mistakes to Avoid

  • Keyword blocks. A list like "budget, money, finance, saving, bills" at the end doesn't help iOS ranking and looks spammy.
  • A wall of text. Use line breaks and short lines; most people read on a phone.
  • Outdated features. If the description mentions a feature you removed, it can confuse users and may conflict with Apple's requirement that metadata be accurate.
  • Unverifiable claims. "#1" or "best" without proof weakens trust, and Apple's guidelines push against unverifiable claims in metadata.
  • Mentioning other platforms. Guideline 2.3.10 says not to include names or imagery of other mobile platforms in your metadata.
  • Hiding the paywall. If key features need a subscription, say so plainly. Surprises turn into one-star reviews.
  • Forgetting localization. An English description in a localized product page breaks the experience. See our App Store localization guide.

How to Update and Improve Your Description

Product Page Optimization tests icons, screenshots and app previews, and custom product pages vary screenshots, previews and promotional text. Neither changes the description, so improvements happen release by release:

  1. Read your recent reviews and support emails for questions the description should answer.
  2. Rewrite the opening line first; it does most of the work.
  3. Ship the change with a regular update and note the date.
  4. Watch product page conversion in App Store Connect Analytics over a comparable period.

Your screenshots will almost always influence more decisions than the description, because they're seen first. Treat the description as the place that answers remaining questions, and see the App Store Optimization guide for how all the pieces work together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an App Store description be?

The limit is 4,000 characters, but length isn't a goal in itself. Write until you've answered what the app does, its main features, what costs money and how to get help, then stop.

Can I use bold text or HTML in an App Store description?

No. Apple's description field is plain text and doesn't support HTML. Use line breaks and simple characters like "•" to create structure.

Can I change my App Store description without an app update?

No. The description changes when you submit a new version. Promotional text, the 170 characters above the description, can be changed at any time.

Do keywords in the description help App Store search?

Apple doesn't list the description among the fields it matches for search, and it advises against adding unnecessary keywords there. Put search terms in the name, subtitle and keywords field instead.

Should my App Store and Google Play descriptions be identical?

Use the same core message, but adapt them. Google Play uses the full description for search and has an 80-character short description, so the Play version usually works keywords in more deliberately.
