Apple Ads and ASO: How Paid and Organic Search Work Together
Apple Ads and ASO share one product page. Learn how to reuse ad keyword data for organic metadata, run custom product page ads and measure organic lift.

TL;DR: Apple Ads (formerly Apple Search Ads) and ASO feed each other. Your ads are built from your product page, so a clearer subtitle and stronger screenshots help both paid and organic installs. In return, ads give you keyword popularity, the real search terms people type and conversion data per keyword, which you can reuse to choose organic metadata. Treat them as one loop: research, test, update.
What Apple Ads Is (and Why the Name Changed)
Apple Ads is Apple's advertising platform for apps on the App Store. Apple rebranded Apple Search Ads as Apple Ads in 2025, so you will still see the old name in older documentation, forum threads and job titles. The product works the same way: you promote your app inside the App Store, and you pay for results.
Apple Ads currently offers several placements:
- Search results: your ad appears at the top of results for searches you bid on, labeled as an ad.
- Search tab: your app appears in suggestions before people type anything.
- Today tab: a placement on the App Store's front page.
- Product pages: your app appears in the list people see while browsing other apps.
For ASO, the search results placement matters most, because it targets the same queries you are trying to rank for organically. There you bid on keywords and pay when someone taps your ad.

Where Apple Ads and ASO Overlap
The key fact: a default Apple Ads search ad is generated from your App Store product page. There is no separate ad creative to design. Whatever you do for ASO shows up in your ads, and vice versa.
| Shared element | Role in Apple Ads | Role in organic ASO |
|---|---|---|
| App name and subtitle | Text shown in the ad | Text relevance and search result appearance |
| Icon | Shown in every ad | Shown in every search result |
| Screenshots and app previews | The default ad shows them | First screenshots appear in search results |
| Keywords | The list you bid on | The terms you target in metadata |
| Ratings | Displayed with the ad | Displayed in search and a ranking factor |
| Custom product pages | Ad variations per ad group | Separate URLs for campaigns and links |
Relevance also runs both ways. Apple only shows your ad for searches it considers relevant to your app, and Search Match, the option that finds queries for you automatically, draws on your App Store metadata among other signals. A vague subtitle makes it harder for both the ad system and the organic algorithm to understand what your app does.
Custom Product Pages as Ad Variations
Custom product pages (CPPs) let you create alternate versions of your product page with different screenshots, app previews and promotional text. Apple currently allows up to 70 per app. In Apple Ads you can attach a CPP to an ad group as an ad variation, so people who search a specific theme see screenshots that match it.
A practical example for a personal finance app:
- Ad group "receipt scanner" uses a CPP whose first screenshot shows a receipt being scanned.
- Ad group "budget planner" uses a CPP that opens with the monthly budget view.
- Ad group "split bills" uses a CPP that leads with the shared expenses screen.
Each CPP reports its own conversion data. That makes ads a fast way to learn which message works before you run a Product Page Optimization test on your default page, which every organic visitor sees. You can also assign keywords to a custom product page so it appears in organic search results for those keywords instead of your default page, which turns a winning ad variation into an organic asset. For setup details, see Custom Product Pages: The Complete Guide.
Because the first screenshots do most of the work in search results, it is worth designing each variation around one clear headline. Your First App Store Screenshot covers how to win that first glance.
Using Apple Ads Data for Organic Keyword Research
Apple Ads is the only place where Apple itself shows you keyword demand and real search queries for the App Store. Even a small budget produces data you cannot get anywhere else.
Search popularity
When you add keywords to a campaign, Apple Ads shows a relative popularity indicator for each term. It is not an absolute search volume, but it comes from Apple and covers the exact storefront you select. Use it to compare candidates for your subtitle and keywords field.
Search terms reports
When you run broad match keywords or Search Match, the search terms report shows the actual queries that triggered your ads, along with taps and installs. Queries with very low volume may be grouped or hidden for privacy. This is where you find long-tail phrases you never thought of.
Conversion rate per keyword
A keyword that gets taps and installs at a high rate is a keyword your product page already satisfies. That is a strong hint it belongs in your organic metadata. A keyword with many impressions but few taps tells you the opposite: either the term is not relevant, or your icon and screenshots do not match what searchers expect.
A five-step research loop
- Start with a seed list of 20 to 50 terms that describe what your app does, plus App Store autocomplete suggestions.
- Run a discovery campaign with Search Match on and broad match keywords, at a budget you can afford to lose while learning.
- Review the search terms report after one to two weeks and mark every term that produced installs.
- Score each term on relevance, Apple's popularity indicator and your ad conversion rate.
- Move the winners into your metadata in the next app version: the strongest into the app name or subtitle, the rest into the 100-character keywords field. Keep bidding on exact match for valuable terms you do not rank for yet.

Does Apple Ads Improve Organic Rankings?
Not directly, as far as Apple has said. Apple does not state that ad spend raises organic positions. However, Apple lists user behavior, including downloads and ratings, among the factors behind search results, and installs that come from ads are still installs. Many developers report an organic lift while campaigns run, but it varies widely and is never guaranteed.
Measure it instead of assuming it:
- Compare App Store search downloads in App Store Connect Analytics for periods with and without campaigns, and account for seasonality and app updates. Apple notes that Apple Ads performance also shows up in App Analytics, so separate paid installs from organic ones before you draw conclusions.
- Watch your organic rank for keywords you also bid on. If your organic installs drop when ads start, the ads may be capturing taps you would have received anyway.
- Check your brand name. Other developers can bid on it, and a modest exact match campaign on your own brand terms can keep a competitor's ad from appearing above your organic result.
A Simple Apple Ads and ASO Plan for Small Budgets
| Week | Apple Ads | ASO |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brand campaign on exact match | Fix subtitle, first three screenshots, icon contrast |
| 2 to 3 | Discovery campaign with Search Match and broad match | Collect search terms and popularity data |
| 4 | Move proven terms to exact match | Update keywords field and subtitle in a new version |
| 5 to 8 | Ad variations with two or three custom product pages | Run a PPO test on the default page with the best message |
| Monthly | Pause terms with poor conversion | Review rankings, refresh screenshots if conversion drops |
Fix the product page before you spend. Ads send traffic to the same screenshots and subtitle as organic search, so a weak page makes every tap more expensive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Apple Search Ads the same as Apple Ads?
Yes. Apple renamed Apple Search Ads to Apple Ads in 2025. The platform, accounts and campaigns carried over; only the name and branding changed.
Can I see App Store search volume in Apple Ads?
Not as absolute numbers. Apple Ads shows a relative popularity indicator per keyword and storefront, and search terms reports show which queries led to taps and installs on your ads.
Should I bid on keywords where I already rank first organically?
Usually only for your brand name if competitors bid on it. For generic terms where you already hold the top organic spot, test pausing the ads and watch whether total installs from that keyword fall.
Do Apple Ads use my App Store screenshots?
Yes. Default ads are generated from your product page, including your app name, subtitle, icon, screenshots and app previews. Ad variations can use a custom product page with different screenshots instead.
Can I advertise my Android app with Apple Ads?
No. Apple Ads only promotes apps on Apple's App Store. On Google Play, the equivalent is an app campaign in Google Ads, which works differently.
