ASO Tools: What You Actually Need (Free and Paid Categories)
Which ASO tools do you really need? Compare keyword, rank tracking, review, creative and testing tools, plus the free ones Apple and Google already give you.

TL;DR: You need fewer ASO tools than most vendor lists suggest. Start with the free first-party tools: App Store Connect Analytics, Apple Ads keyword data, Play Console reports and the native A/B tests. Add one paid keyword and rank-tracking tool once you actively optimize dozens of keywords, and use a creative tool that makes screenshot variants fast enough to actually test them.
The Six Categories of ASO Tools
"ASO tool" is an umbrella term. Most products on the market cover one or two of the jobs below, and a few bundle several. Knowing the categories helps you buy for a real gap instead of paying for dashboards you never open. If you are new to the discipline, start with the complete guide to App Store Optimization and come back here.
| Category | What it does | Free first-party option | When paying makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyword research | Finds search terms, estimates popularity and competition | Apple Ads keyword popularity and search terms, store autocomplete | You target many keywords or several countries |
| Rank tracking | Records your position for each keyword over time | Manual searches on a device set to the target country | You change metadata regularly and need history |
| Market intelligence | Estimates competitors' downloads, revenue and metadata changes | Browsing the stores and top charts | You need market sizing or competitor monitoring |
| Review management | Collects ratings and reviews, alerts you, helps you reply | Review sections in App Store Connect and Play Console | High review volume or many languages |
| Creative production | Screenshots, icons, app previews, feature graphics | Figma, Canva, Xcode Simulator, fastlane | Many sizes, languages or test variants |
| Testing and analytics | Measures conversion and runs experiments | App Store Connect Analytics, Product Page Optimization, Play store listing experiments | Rarely; the stores' own data is the source of truth |
Notice the last column. For testing and analytics, the stores already give you the most reliable data, because only Apple and Google see every impression and install.
Free ASO Tools From Apple and Google
Before you buy anything, set up the tools you already have access to as a developer. Together they cover a surprising share of day-to-day ASO work.
Apple
- App Store Connect Analytics shows impressions, product page views, conversion rate and downloads, broken down by source such as App Store search, App Store browse, app referrers and web referrers. This is your baseline for every change. See App Store Connect Analytics: Metrics That Matter.
- Product Page Optimization (PPO) lets you test up to three treatments of your icon, screenshots and app previews against your original page.
- Custom Product Pages let you build alternate product pages (Apple currently allows up to 70 per app) with their own screenshots and promotional text, each with a unique URL.
- Apple Ads shows a relative popularity indicator when you add keywords to a campaign, and its search terms reports show which real queries triggered your ads. Both are useful for organic research, as explained in Apple Ads and ASO: How They Work Together.
- App Store search suggestions on an iPhone are a free, if rough, signal of what people type. Start typing a seed word and note the completions.
- Play Console statistics and acquisition reports break down store listing visitors and installs by traffic source, including Google Play search where data is available.
- Store listing experiments run A/B tests on your icon, feature graphic, screenshots and descriptions. See Google Play Store Listing Experiments.
- Custom store listings let you show different assets to specific countries or audiences.
- Ratings and reviews in Play Console let you read and reply to reviews in one place.
Tip: Write down your current conversion rate and top search keywords before you sign up for any paid tool. Without a baseline you cannot tell whether the tool, or the changes it inspired, made any difference.
Creative ASO Tools: Screenshots, Icons and Previews
Keyword tools get most of the attention, but your icon and first screenshots decide whether a search impression becomes a product page view or an install. That makes creative tools ASO tools too, and often the ones with the fastest payoff.
A good creative tool for ASO should let you:
- Export every required size from one design. Apple currently requires 6.3-inch iPhone screenshots for every iPhone app and 13-inch iPad screenshots if your app runs on iPad. The App Store screenshot size guide and the Google Play size guide list the rest.
- Export flattened images without an alpha channel. Transparent PNGs are a common cause of upload problems, and Google Play rejects them.
- Localize text per language with warnings when a translated headline overflows.
- Produce variants quickly. A PPO test with three treatments, or a set of custom product pages, means three or more complete screenshot sets per locale.
- Keep your brand consistent between icon, screenshots and the Google Play feature graphic.
General design tools like Figma and Canva can do all of this, but you set up each size and language by hand. Purpose-built screenshot tools trade some flexibility for speed. Pick based on how often you expect to change your visuals: if you plan to test monthly, speed wins.
A Practical ASO Tool Stack by Stage
You do not need the same stack as a large publisher. Match your tools to the amount of traffic and the number of markets you actually have.
| Stage | Recommended stack | What to skip for now |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-launch or first app | First-party analytics, Apple Ads keyword data, a spreadsheet for keywords, one creative tool | Paid market intelligence, review automation |
| Growing app with steady search traffic | Add one paid keyword and rank tracking tool, run PPO and store listing experiments | Download estimates for every competitor |
| Team with many locales | Add review management, localization workflow, market intelligence | Tools that duplicate what App Store Connect already shows |
How to evaluate a paid keyword tool during a trial
- Check your own rankings. Search for five of your keywords on a device set to the target country and compare the positions with what the tool reports.
- Compare popularity data with Apple Ads. Third-party popularity and volume figures are modeled estimates. They should broadly agree with Apple's relative popularity indicator for the same terms.
- Confirm country and language coverage for every storefront you care about, not just the US.
- Look for keyword field helpers that count characters and flag duplicates across your app name, subtitle and keywords field.
- Test exports. You will want your keyword history in a spreadsheet eventually.
- Read the pricing model. Plans are usually priced by the number of apps, keywords or countries tracked, so estimate your real usage first.

What ASO Tools Cannot Do for You
Even the best tools have limits, and knowing them saves money and disappointment.
- They cannot guarantee rankings. Apple and Google describe the broad factors behind search results but do not publish weights. Any tool that promises a ranking position is guessing.
- Download and revenue estimates are estimates. They are useful for relative comparisons, not for exact numbers.
- AI metadata generators still need review. Check every suggestion against the character limits (30 for the app name, 30 for the subtitle, 100 for the keywords field on the App Store) and against Guideline 2.3.7, which prohibits packing metadata with trademarked terms, popular app names or irrelevant phrases.
- They cannot replace testing. A tool can suggest that a screenshot headline is better. Only a PPO test or a store listing experiment can show that it converts better with your audience.
- They cannot fix the product. Ratings, retention and reviews feed into how stores rank and how users decide. No tool compensates for an app people uninstall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there free ASO tools that are actually useful?
Yes. App Store Connect Analytics, Product Page Optimization, Custom Product Pages, Apple Ads keyword popularity, Play Console reports and store listing experiments are all free for developers and come straight from the stores. Many indie developers run their ASO with these plus a spreadsheet.
Do I need a paid ASO tool for a brand-new app?
Usually not on day one. A new app has little traffic to measure, so focus on choosing relevant keywords, writing a clear name and subtitle, and shipping strong screenshots. A paid rank tracker becomes worthwhile once you change metadata regularly and need history.
How accurate are keyword volume numbers in ASO tools?
They are modeled estimates, not data from Apple or Google. Use them to compare keywords against each other, and cross-check important terms with Apple Ads popularity and your own App Store Connect search data.
Can a screenshot design tool improve my ASO?
Indirectly, yes. Screenshots do not affect keyword relevance, but they influence how many people who see your app in search tap through and install, and installs are among the user-behavior signals Apple says it considers.
Which ASO tool should I buy first?
If you already have steady search traffic, a keyword and rank tracking tool is usually the first paid purchase. If you have little traffic, invest your time in creative quality and testing with the free tools instead.
